List of World Heritage Sites in India
Complete list of all 44 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India, including cultural, natural, and mixed sites. Updated for 2025 with the latest inscriptions.
India is home to 44 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it one of the countries with the most designated sites globally. These range from ancient Buddhist cave temples to Mughal architectural masterpieces, colonial-era ensembles, and biodiversity hotspots. The earliest inscriptions date to 1983 when Agra Fort, Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, and the Taj Mahal were designated. The cultural sites dominate the list, showcasing Indias remarkable architectural and artistic heritage across millennia. The Chola Temples of Tamil Nadu, the rock-cut wonders of Ajanta and Ellora in Maharashtra, and the temple complexes of Khajuraho and Konark represent the pinnacle of Indian temple architecture. Mughal-era sites including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Humayuns Tomb, and the Red Fort chronicle the empires architectural evolution. Indias natural heritage sites are equally impressive. The Western Ghats, a mountain range older than the Himalayas, is recognized as one of the worlds top biodiversity hotspots. Kaziranga National Park protects two-thirds of the worlds great one-horned rhinoceroses, while the Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest on Earth. Recent additions include the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas and Santiniketan in 2023, followed by the Maratha Military Landscapes and the Moidams of the Ahom Dynasty in 2024.
